An Ode to Mr Frosty

all the years that ive been on this big blue and green marble id like to think that ive learnt a thing or two but can also admit that im still learning somethings along the way. One of the first things i was taught is to have patience. sure at times its tricky to try and relax when theres something you want or some place you wanna go or something you wanna see but at least these days theres (for myself at least) far less desires and far greater management of those instinctial emotions. As a kid this was not the case, for instance one christmas we got a 'Mr Frosty', this was a an ice lolly making toy everyone my age wanted ready for the summer! i mean this toy could be revolutionary no more hearing a little tune and chasing some big truck miles down the road. Then having to que up with mobs of kids fighting over the last the Zapp or Fab.. With The Mr Frosty you could just head to your bedroom and get an ice lolly when ever you want, breakfast, elevenses, lunch, midnight snack! absolute freedom. Or so i thought. Summer didnt take long to come about, as always as a kid you kinda remember it as christmas, chocolate, summer and the day came to use this toy. With my mouth watering and butterflys in my stomach I got it all out of the packaging ready to get myself some ice lollies, Then the burble burst... i was told id have to wait for some water to freeze in the freezer...

As a kid you dont think of these logistics its one of the freedoms of youth you dont have to forward think or plan you just go with it, but this is also a curse. A curse that meant i had to wait for Water to turn to ice... Water to turn to ice? to a kid thats a very long time! thats like i might as well put the Mr frosty away till next summer long. Looking back i should of just put it away for an hour or two, but i didnt. I did something far worse. i still wanted to play with the Mr Frosty test it out, see what its like . Instead of using the recommended 'ice' in the mechanism. i decided to add the crayons i had been using to draw with earlier, it was awesome a crazy trippy sequence where rainbows would literally be pouing out of this smug looking snowmans chest, he looked like has was having fun, i was having a blast for an hour or two until that water became ice, excited more than ever now after experiencing with it for a bit. I put the ice into the mechanism, like a pro ready to create some sweet sweet cool happy joy! Viva la revolution, gone the days of ice cream vans.

How i wish i could tell you joy was created But there was no joy. From that one silly crayon playing event The only thing that would ever came out of Mr Frosty's chest were horribly cold, beautiful coloured bits of rubbery salty crayon goop. I killed Mr Frosty before he had even time to live. That day i learnt the virtue of patience.

Growing up...

Growing up is hard. As a kid I used to love going for really big walks in places i never knew, normally getting lost for hours. Although it wasnt 'getting lost' back then. It was going on an adventure, exploring something new, fresh and exciting, coming across scary old buildings that clearly looked haunted, or at least done up to look like a dangerous half falling down building by the government to keep adults away but really there is a multi million pound secret lab a mile underneath the surface of the old building with a secret passage and lift to get to it behind a bookcase or inside a fire place.back in those days you took it for granted but they were the best times, having that sort of natural instinct to imagine rather than see whats really there is incredible.

Its the one thing ive tried to grasp onto through moving to new places, meeting new people, starting new jobs, each one is just a different adventure waiting to be explored...
even if it isnt as exciting as coming across a secret lab hidden in an old run down shack.

Love my magical, fun films with kids getting into wacky adventures and into mysterious situations but Narnia just never really seemed to do it for me. It should be up my street but i think the kids were just far too annoying, youve been shoved through a cupboard into a mystical realm where the inhabitants are at war with each other, why do they have to whine and moan so much!?.. anyway it was on the other night so figured id do a little picture of it.

Dont Panic Poster Competition 'Machine'

I decided to enter the new Dont Panic competition in which one has to draw a poster upon a theme chosen by the company, this months theme is 'Machine' as per usual think i got a little bit too carried away with this one but its basically the perfect machine for the lazy gentleman, it does everything from turning your urine into a clean hot shower to boiling you a pot of coffee complete with the feshest of milk possible and all environmentally powered by your own (and cow) Methane. Thats only a few of the unique attributes of this machine, try and see if you can figure the rest out and if you like this poster head over to DONT PANIC! and vote!

Secret Wars Southampton

I Recently battled against the champion Gustav at Secret Wars Southampton an amazing monthly art event in which two artists are allocated a good selection of Edding Pens, a large white board (twice the height of me, which doesnt say much to be fair) and an hour and a half to draw a large piece in order to win the love of audience and two judges with the artist who wins the most categories winning! oh and a nice little bit of battle banter is essential.

Was a really fun night and great laugh not to mention a good turn out, i managed to grab the attention of the audience and won there vote with my piece of the suggestion that Gustav is flushing himself down the toilet (one on the right) but Gustav (whos piece was impressive: Left) got the votes from two judges and therefore won the battle! look forward to hopefully battling more in the future...

Stokes Croft

following the theme of recent posts i turned my hand to something very far out of my comfort zone... Painting realism, never been great at it or been a huge fan of it but wanted a challenge so did a big canvas piece of Stokes Croft and it quickly became apparent i cannot draw realism.. everything seems to just have a bit of a cartoonish.. not too real edge to it but at least i tried...

Am far too comfortable doing the ol' two tone shading so thought id take a stab at a more layered based approach of colouring, this one used like over 30 different layers compared to my usual four or more...

im not quite sure what this is all about but i felt being a guy id never really ever drawn pretty pictures of unicorns and rainbows... apparently i still havent.
once again trying to stay away from the comfort zone by drawing an action shot, not really used to doing them but really enjoyed this one and do believe ill be trying alot more in the future...

A kid finds a caterpilla, makes friends with it, wanting to protect it he takes it to a cave and leaves it there. He returns a few years later to see how the caterpilla is doing. Its doing just fine, growing in both size and intelligence. There's only one problem, the boy didnt leave the caterpilla anything to eat... hes very hungry and very happy to finally find some food...
